Defining ‘Holistic’ in Drug Rehab

What do you think of when someone says the word ‘holistic’?  If you’re like most poeople then it is probably something similar to this definition from dictionary.com: identifying with principles of holism in a system of therapeutics, esp. one considered outside the mainstream of scientific medicine, as naturopathy or chiropractic, and usually involving nutritional measures.

So, if you were applying that definition to a drug rehab, then you might assume that it would use natural therapies to address the symptoms of addiction rather then a more westernized (pharmaceutical) mediine approach.  However, there are more and more addiction treatment centers today that are using the term holistic in their descriptions and even their titles that apply a different definition, simiilar to that found from webster.com: relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts.

This is spun into saying that the whole person needs to be treated, not just the stymptoms or only certain parts of the problem.  While this definition is also true, what has been misleading is that many of these drug rehab programs will still use prescription drugs to treat addiction, thus taking them out of the realm of the first definition of holistic displayed above.

Since many of todays more traditional rehab centers fall under the pharmaceutical regime, it may be that you need to explore non 12 step drug rehab options.  Either way, we can help you find a program for yourself or a loved one in need.  Just call us today at 1-877-372-5719.
